The Tamagotchi, developed by Bandai and launched in Japan on November 23, 1996, introduced a generation of children to the concept of digital responsibility through a keychain-sized device containing a pixelated virtual creature that required regular feeding, cleaning, and attention to survive. The device arrived in North America in May 1997 and sold 12 million units within its first year, with demand so intense that retailers resorted to allocation systems and waiting lists. The Tamagotchi's premise was elegantly cruel: neglect your virtual pet and it would sicken and die, leaving a tombstone on the screen that functioned as an electronic rebuke. This mechanic generated the remarkable phenomenon of genuine emotional attachment to a 32-pixel creature: children interrupted school days to secretly tend their devices, and reports of Tamagotchi grief—children crying over the death of virtual pets—circulated widely. Schools across the United States banned the devices for this reason, though enterprising students devised concealment strategies. Competitor products followed rapidly: Giga Pets (Tiger Electronics), Nano Babies, Nano Puppies, and the Digimon virtual pet (which added a battle mechanic) created a category that represented the commercial vanguard of the digital companion concept that would eventually evolve into mobile gaming, virtual assistants, and social robots.
